Whats the trick?
I still have oil spewing out of the water pump weep hole. I ordered up the new seal and installed it when it arrived. I made sure to tape over the sharp edges of the water pump shaft and greased everything up. Is there some trick to this that i am missing? Could something else me amiss?
This isnt a slow leak more like a drip under throttle....

No trick that I know of. I've replaced it twice when replacing the mechanical seal and haven't head a leak Be careful with the grease, the mechanical seal does not like grease (though the wp seal shouldn't mind a dab of grease).

polish that shaft ive had to replace mine
twice in 65K miles. second time i had to leave the
oil seal about 2 mm from fully seated to miss
the groove worn in the impeller shaft.
new motor got a brand new shaft from the
get go since i was already in there. manual
describes everything pretty well including
keeping the water seal clean and free of oil

when you pressed the mech seal, you have to be careful not to damage face behind it?
seem to remeber you have to use abit of sealant on the oil seal?
Has the tiny spring in the seal been disloged?

The spring that wraps around the seal is still intact. i dont recall sealant when installing the gasket (pulling out the ol shop manual now).
I did ding the thin metal that is sandwiched between the two seals on the case (on the flat non-sealing-or so i think surface) would that be causing the seal not to sit perfectly flat? The seal seated just fine.
Edit: Guess this will give me something to do tonight. Back in i go i guess.

Turns out that the seal was twisted and not seated when i pulled the thing apart. sorted that then reassembled everything after polishing up the shaft. still leaks but much slower. Guess the next step is to try pulling the seal back as per N2 suggestion.

And by now the oil seal may be nicked a little. They often don't like being R&R'd more than once I hear (I've not actually tried it as I've always gone in with a new one). good luck

YEP... like they said... pollish up your shaft buddy. I had mine all corroded and pitted... got it clean with my dremel and polished it up with my dremel again and used a new seal. Zero problems.

guess I'm lucky, my old 50k 97 has always been pitting and corrosion free. But Although I reused mine 6/7 times before it finally weeped. (Just used platic bag over shaft) it. I'd toss the seal and start again, probabaly nicked/deformed as been said
regards sealant? - beleive the oil seal retainer comes with a band of blue sealer? or was that the mech seal, or both cant remeber now
