motor rebuild... need part nums, and sources

Ok, so I have a big end rod bearing bad on the tiller, after pricing used motors and debating the realiability of a used engine, I think I'm gonna just rebuild my motor. Question is where's the best place to get parts and is there any upgrade parts to put in it? Better oil pump? Better bearings? What should I be paying for parts? Is there any extended oil pickup tube that I can get for the ocasional wheelie? And what manual is the best to use for the rebuild? Anything I can do to while I'm in there? Like pair valves and such? I've done the tre, gonna have the ecm flashed, filter, full system. Just want to do this once, not be in there again.

you need to strip the engine first to assess the damage.

a bad bearing failure will fill the engine with metal and all sorts of bits will be damaged.

if its just starting to go away then the deal is simpler.

you most certainly will need an oil pump.

if the crank and rods are bad S/H crank and rods are the go. bearings are individual so you need to measure the parts to choose the bearing sizes.

if the rod bearing has just started to go maybe the crank is not damaged get it checked at an auto engine reconditioner and they will tell you ,

slightly scuffed rods can be "resized" and this restores the rod to original dimensions.

One alternative is to grind the crank "undersize" and the bearings from a B1800 honda car engine are suitable for this, again consult a car engine crank regrinder for this.

basically the first step is strip the engine . find out the extent of the damage and then make your assessments.

Here's some links for parts.
The usual www.ronayers.com
and I've had real good luck with these fellows
www.prosourcemotorsports.com

And use the manual in the online vault here on the site.

If you know its the big end by a clop clop sound then you will have more than just crank bearings to replace.

All in all its not that bad. The motor is very simple. Kind of surprising after only rebuilding car motors and dirt bikes (IMO)

Rebuild it but don't get all crazy with aftermarket performance crap. Just make her reliable so that you don't have to worry about doing it again, again IMO.

well i tore the rear cyl off it and thats how i know its a rod bearing, its got a few thous play up and down, didnt hit the head or anything, just sounded like marbles in the case. i want it to be super reliable, cause im gonna end up puttin tons of miles on it this summer for work. i just want the right parts in it the first time. i do enjoy a few wheelies (gonna watch how long i do em for now tho) so i was wanting some sort of pickup tube to help. so what would i be lookin at rebuilding it? crank bearings, oil pump, gaskets, new rings, thought about shaving the head a bit too. think a total of around $500 is feasable?

The sump should not go dry. There are a few caviats though

1) Full synthetic will prevent the oil from foaming. In a wheelie the oil can foam up -foam doesnt lube. Full syn will also prevent waxing which can make it difficult for oil to flow through the small journals

2) Use a light weight oil. ow-30 or 0w-40. This will help the recovery time if the sump ever does become unsubmerged. It will also allow the crank to receive more oil flow through the tiny journals

3) Use the proper oil filter. Stock suzi or K&N. These are built with the proper flow tolerances

4) Fill the oil to the full line

5) Change your oil when it is dirty

thats exactly what i did before it blew up, ran st30 repsol synth oil, just a touch over the full line and only use k&n filter. it did go right after i switched to repsol, i was using maxima but had to switch because of avalibility. do you think i can rebuild this back to stock for around $500?

yeah, the crank work will be the big task

just get a used rod and get all new low end bearings and seals. Also get a used oil pump.

Just get the parts, take a saturday and break it all down by the manual. Then take a sunday and put her back together!

Talk to cyclecamper and the other guys here. They really know their stuff and can help you locate parts.

Also I would love it if you could take pics and notes. I will make a page on my site dedicated to your rebuild

there is a clean out screen that holds the big chunks. But if you have big end failure your oil plug will look like this:
