its going to be expensive, sounds like lower rod bearings
you could do it, depends on how mechanically inclined you say you are, theres a lot of fine measuring and the like involved

Knocking? AND locking up? - What were the circumsatnces?
Personally, I'd tear it down just to see whats what and make sure I wasnt ripped off by a mech. But if knocking?, bet on new/another crank, plus some gaskets/bearings/pump etc. But minus the crank, looking at 300-400 pounds sterling. double that for labour I would imagine.
I'd look out for a complete motor, biuld the best bits from the two. Its really not hard to do by yourself, pretty basic stuff.

Indeed, the engine is worth more parted out anyway so you have nothing to lose by taking it apart.
If you have a shop do it, they usually use all new parts. Crank $800 etc. etc.
A used engine is a better way to go, and selling the old parts will offset some of the cost. Or pick up a beat bike and part it out, keeping the engine.
Just don't do it like me, two engines and enough parts to build a bike but no time to do it.
