97 TLS rebuild....

I just picked up a 1997 forest green TLS for $400.00, the only down side is that a fair amount of the engine came out with the oil...

So I am already planning on doing a complete engine rebuild to get her back on the road as my daily driver.

I already have a good set of cylinders and low milage TLR pistons. I also have a spare set of TLR heads and cams incase the TLS parts are damaged.

I know I will need at the very least a new oil pump, relief valve and most likely a crankshaft and maybe rods. I am already planning on using a vented rear valve cover and creating a breather system on this bike. I also remember reading there was an oiling difference between the older and newer engines. I will be doing a lot of reading over the next few weeks to gather as much information on rebuilding my 97 TLS engine as possible. Any helpfull tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you...

TLR or '98- casings, they're stronger/stiffer, but then you also need anoter secondary shaft, sprocket bearing, seal and spacer.

Next to that the TLR/'98-TLS uses solid shift fork guides, larger oil jets and different crank bearing clearances.

There's also a steel plate in the bottom of the sump of the later models.

That's what I changed throwing '97 internals in '98- casings.

The bike has ran 35000km since. No probs.

No guarantees, but I think the windage tray will fit the '97 model. It's held in place by the oil canal and the back side of the engine as far as I recal, and the casings shouldn't be that different in that area.

For probably a few bucks you can have a try. Don't blame me if it doesn't fit.
