Friggin' Varta Battery!

We were riding yesterday, the G-TSS was in full force with a beautiful 102°F day and awesome roads. I was running the Husky at a steady 80-85 mph and it was rocking along. The boys were having fun. At about 180 miles of riding, the battery in the Husky gave up. I was on a brand new pavement chip and seal road that probably was a million degrees hotter than everything else. Anyway as we came into and out of this s-turn into an uphill, the think bogged-started-bogged again. So I coasted under a shade tree. I messed with the battery leads a few times and it would try to come back, but it acted like it dropped a cell. So, it has been hard starting since I bought it, so I wondered if the "Varta" battery has slowly degraded since I bought the bike.

Well to my surprise, the thing is busted open and has been for a while, apparently. There is absolutely no mess anywhere on the bike, or the outside of the battery, beyond what is shown. But the + terminal is almost unhooked and it has a dead cell (10.62 VDC) so I will try to pick one up today if Cyclegear has one in stock. If not, the local Kaw-Suzuk dealer will hook me up.

So shout out to Tye, and Dana who helped me get her loaded and back to the house. What a great ride it was yesterday. Woo Hoo!

Forgive the quality, cell phone pictures

No mess on the bike. That's lucky considering the way the battery has opened up.

As a results of his 20+ years in the nuclear power field I'm guessing that Doug's body actually absorbed the contents of the battery through osmosis. Rumor has it that Doug has been spied drinking reactor water - his response as to why - "because it makes my doughnuts taste better".

Now he's gonna be pissing glow in the dark acid for at least a week so keep him away from your flowers and trees until this all blows over.

looks like a crap battery. I'd put an Odessy (sp?) if they make one to fit, if not, perhaps a good Yusa like comes in the TLS

Doug, I've had two Varta batteries do exactly the same on my TLR. Bought from the local Varta dealer and burst within a month. Wouldn't have another. I always thought Varta were a reliable brand.
