TL Ticks Loader

Hi all, Can anyone please throw some more light on this tl ticks loadly thing? why o why do they all tick ?mine didnt when it was new so what has changed? It cant be mechanicly good. Is it not metal hitting metal? will they loosen or tighten with millage please? Is there Any oil that will help?
im on sylcoline fully synthetic 15/50 and iv spent over £2oo at my local stealership to be told all my tappets etc etc are all good.
My babys only done 7000 miles from new but she sounds like a bag of old spanners.

Yours doesn't tick because it needs a tappet adjustment.

Actually you probably never need to adjust your tappets so long as you dont redline your bike for long periods of time.

On my site, in the FAQ it goes over the different sounds...

Yes... I am quite sure you can.

As for the initial post ... I think it will be the scissor gear stuff, perhaps a little noise from the decompressor too. Just check your cam chain tension/ ers now and again and all should be good.

Springs in the scissor gears lost some tension over time.

scissor gears should not tick but should cause a noise sort of like a supercharger.

Decomps click, tappets tap, scissor gears whine -typically.

Slash that exhaust and you won't hear any tapping at all

On each cam is a gear the timing chain rides on -typical of most engines. TL engines have 2 gears -the cam gear and the scissor gear. these two gears are right against one another acting as one gear. The scissor gear has tension on the chain even when the cam gear is slack Or soften the jolt from the big 500cc firing. This is done with springs. Keeping tension on the cam chain prevents it from slapping around and stretching.

Some folks remove the scissor gear assmbley to reduce cam rotational weight. The theory is to increase rev up time.

I don't believe that there are any rev up time effects from removing the gears. Since there is no direct power or torque increase, so long as your engine is under load (moving your bike) the rev-up time will be exactly the same.

i tried both....put them back in because i didn't like the noise....there is a small icrease in power to be had....but very small...this will not be down to the few grams saved fron the actual parts...but the friction that is reduced when you remove the scissor gears...i couldn't belive how much difference between them...only one way to get rid of the tick...new cams....i found that it's the scissor gear wearing on the shaft that makes the tick...nothing to worry about.

The scissor gears don't affect the chain or chain tension, the chain tensioner keeps tension on the chain. The scissors gears are there to quieten them down They keep tension on the cam gear teeth.

And when people pull them out their engines are noisier.
