Dump Truck
I've taken the leap, I'm now a TLS owner. My avatar is the new kid in the shop. A Red 1997 TLS w/14K miles on the clock. All stock, so far, and I haven't even got a chance to ride it yet. (Snow still on the ground here in mid Missouri.) But I've heard it run, and all the gears are there (at least on the stand.)
I can tell just from pushing it around the shop and unloading it in the driveway, the steering damper came directly off a dump truck. So, my first post is a question, what can I do about the damper without breaking the bank? Can I put a universal ohlins on with the stock hardware? If so, which length do I need? If not, what's my best option under $400? (I don't really care about the brand, but the ohlins on my zx6r was a pretty nice unit.)
I'm a middle-aged full time college student, so saving the money would be great, but I just don't think I can live with the stock damper.

fix it, it cost too much.

 welcome
Nice bike
Save money and overhaul the one you have? new oil works wonders. If not, there are plenty of less expensive options than an Ohlins.

Just take it off.....
I road my 97 TLS with no dampener for a few months, only had to save a tank slapper twice before the recall came out.
No but seroiusly, most of the popular dampeners are in the $400 range and up. If you look to the left of your computer screen you will see an ad for a dampener from Trible Performance, that it the cheapest I've seen a dampener for sale for the TL.
And BTW Welcome

Like Chris says
Replace the oil with 2.5w fork oil
Steve TLS posted a great pick showing the best way to do it involving attaching a funnel to the filling screw to refill/bleed.

Thanks guys, I'll give the rebuild a try! Before I rip into it, what seals/o-rings should I have on hand? (I've got lots of 2.5 from motocross fork jobs, but I'm at a loss on where to find seals/o-rings for the factory damper. (maybe unnecessary?)

If they don't leak at the moment, just pump out the old fluid, flush through a couple of loads of fresh fluid, then fill and bleed.

Cool. Thanks, Steve. And I've been lurking for a couple days anticipating this purchase, so I kinda knew Chris' "welcome" was on the way...but thanks anyways.
I've seen lots of great stuff on this forum, and I am twitching ready to ride this beast...as soon as we get rid of this F**K**G SNOW!

Here's how I filled mine.
Mike, here's a dampener
This is a pop up dampener, you can get rotary ones too.

Nice pic of the "pop-up". The rotary damper may have to be replaced someday too, but not enough cake in the budget for a rear shock right now. Gotta get tires, air/fuel/oil filters, and gas...lots and lots of gas. I've had sport bikes before, but this is my first v-twin. Looking forward to it!
P.S. What part of the procedure involves the drill press? (J/K)
