metal bits in the oil
ive finished servicing my gsxr track bike. its a 2000-2001 750.
all went well except for some dirty valve covers which i ignored see the blow pic and thread here -------------> Are these Valves dirty?
i went for a quick fang up and down the road and it felt bloody fantastic. unlimited revs and power compared to the TL, got off grinning like an idiot.
the downer came later on when cleaning out the oil basin, i found metal bits in the oil. just to be 100% sure it wasn't in the bucket before the oil change i cleaned the basin and then re drained the new oil. i got metal bits again (not as many). the metal bits are a mix of thin flat bits and 3 dimensional bits. the biggest one is about 5mm x 2mm x 2mm. the pick below is of all i found so not much really.
anyone got any ideas? im guessing Ive got to pull the engine apart and check everything. i wonder if the dirty valves are related?
looks like ive got a lot of reading and research to do, search function here i come.

It would help to know if it is ferrous metal or aluminum. Also were the cases split on the rebuild? Did someone leave stuff in the bottom? Looks like piston to me, but it is just a wild guess. The metal seems a little distorted/crushed as if it was aluminum in contact with harder stuff.
Just a WAG on my part.

its alunimium... it didnt respond to a magnet.
the bike hasnt been rebuilt or had the cases split. just a full service. only 12,000km on it the last 5,000km at trackdays.
Stu i did find it hard to get neutral after the quick fang up and down the road but now with the engine off its easy to get neutral. perhaps a clue there?
the metal bits are fairly mangled and i can really see only one factory edge in all the bits and and even then it seems mangled so im not quite sure.

Hard to get neutral with a running engine is usually a little clutch drag.

Try a session of bleeding the clutch and I reckon it will clear up the clutch drag.

I no longer have a split case on hand to look at but I am guessing that it may be part of the casing which retains a bearing, often there is a thin web that a bearing rests on , this may have cracked and come away. This can happen if a shaft is hit or pushed sideways either in assembly or if there is a side force maybe from a gear jumping out. Sam may chime in with his vast knowledge and know if there is a likely culprit lurking in the case structure

its a cable clutch and im not overtly worried about the clutch drag (although adjusting the clutch is something i missed in the service, naughty me).
i just thought it might be a clue.

so bottom line is split the cases and have a look and then report back oh well ill get to the bottom of the TL's woes first then with one running bike at least ill stay sane and i might actualy enjoy splitting the cases and having a poke around on the gsxr. it will be a first for me.
almost makes me want a honda

i am slowly getting further with splitting the cases, i have got the top and bottom cases split. the middle ones i have yet to get to. pics so far....
do these dogs look overly worn for a 12,000km engine? looks like a fairly big cresent shape out of one of them but im not sure if thats normal?
i found this broken very small spring inside the clutch push rod seal/bearing (the pieces of alloy next to the spring in the photo are some of the bits i found originally in the oil).
the red arrow in the below pic is exactly where i found it sort of inside that cavity.
The red arrow in this second pic is the corresponding point in the other case. i suspect the little spring has come from some where up stream in the oil channel. i have had a good nosy around but cant for the life of me seen where it has come from??
another possibility is it may have dislodged from somewhere else in the bottom case and just dropped down onto the point where i found it while i was lifting the bottom case off?
Anyone got any ideas?
