We are talking about appropriate speed. In the vast majority of cases I will of course concede that it is not acceptable to drag race up to 140mph where you would find and be in close proximity to other road users. i.e. on a busy freeway , back street, built up area etc! The Bike hitting the Van as per above was a clear example of where/when not to drag race as there was obviously a road at which a vehicle as in this example could, and did emerge from where if travelling @ X amount of speed allowed no margin for error! Even if the freeway was void of traffic but there is just one road for traffic to imerge then to do 100+mph passed that road is stupid. How about pass the ajoining road at a sensible speed and then proceed to fun speed for the rest of the long straight clear road with no ajoining roads!

On my commute to my old work place, there are several parts that you can safely exceed 100mph with no risk what so ever as the road and conditions consistantly allow for it where further on or before it would be suicide to do any such speed. Like your ride to work or your regular rideout route, we all know where we can absolutley and 99.9% excede the limits, also where it is 80% safe, 50%, 20% and so on including all the places i.e. built up areas where it is not safe at all.

On those rare occasions at the right time and on the right road fun can be had in relative safety. Damn that kid was 20 and likely to be a squid who obviously made a tragic decision that cost him and 4 others there lifes.

I've never said speed itself is dangerous, only where, and how much, its practiced.

ever seen 375 in nevada? you could do flat out runs all damn day long as it's got litterally 20 miles between turns, nothing on in the valley except shrubs so you can see VERY far ahead, and whenever you see a car, it's miles away and you simply slow down.

as far as the op goes, I stand by what I said.

good point

To speed in London is an art form. My rule is to go fast in between the danger spots. What determins the level of danger or risk is in the eye of the beholder and purely perspective and not the gospel. I do not have all the answers but I am consistantly revising the database. I am constantly observing and reviewing the dangers and learning all of the time. Being a despatch rider on a pushbike and motorbike has taught me lots. Now I am in a warm office but when I am out I am still battling the demons that make me wanna have fun but at the same time doing it as safe a possible. It can be done, speak to those old school despatch riders that have been speeding 12 hours a day 6 days a week for 30 years and not one broken bone to speak of.

I too stand by what I say and to date am proof that it can be done. For how long who knows. In the meantime I will just try to become a better rider. BIkesafe is the next course I am doing

I am a geek for stats and known by some as statto. riding is a numbers game and like poker the odds can be stacked in your favour from nothing but good old sound judgement, not just luck. If you play the road like a game of chess you stand a good chance.

I must admit to the odd drag race, in fact i had one several months back against a triumph, we both pulled up at traffic lights, both of us lane splitting, had a glance at each other and it was on. 1,2,3 flat and am couple bike lengths in front,so is going through my mind, what am i doing .......i am going to lose my license (and job as well) if i get caught but the adrenaalin pumping hard , nothing else matters! Havent had a drag race since and now pretty much abide by the speed limits. But that day stays in my mind , it was fun though.

There's a road on L.I. You can go wide open with no roads intersecting and it's 2 lanes. The only thing that can hit you is the deer. Have I done stuff on the L.I.E. of corse. It's late and the only people on the road are cops and a car or 2 witch I slow down when I get to cause you never know what there going to do. Am I a idiot yeah . And every track drag or road is atleast 2-3 hours away. So sorry but I bought the bike for more then just the fact that it looks great.

I must remember all these excuses for when I get busted. I'm sure the copper will see it your way and let me off. "I'm sorry, I can't afford a track day so sped down this highway" Bingo. No ticket Any cars I pass like that, they'll understand too.

It's very common, our dunny doors have to open outward so that when you cark it and fall forward someone can open the door and use the dunny, otherwise no one could use it without busting the door down.

So you can afford the fine when you get busted? (No doubt you'll be here crying about it too). You can afford the medical bills from all the damage when you do crash? If you can't afford proper gear you shouldn't even be on a bike?

And the next step!

How about banning all sportsbikes on public roads? Because of dickheads!

Quote:
From the AP wire

"Bronrott: Crotch Rockets Are 'Potential Death Machines'
June 1, 2007 - 8:08am

FORESTVILLE, Md. - Saying that so-called bullet bikes or crotch rockets are "wreaking a tremendous amount of havoc on our roadways," one Maryland lawmaker says the state should consider banning the motorcycles from street use.

A crash on the Capital Beltway Wednesday night killed two people and left 15 others injured. Police say that the accident happened as they were trying to stop one of these speeding motorcycles.

"They are potential death machines in the wrong hands," says Delegate Bill Bronrott of Montgomery County. "I think we should look at the possibility of saying, 'Hey, these are only intended for recreational use and should be used on race courses rather than on public highways."
Bronrott says Maryland State Police are contacting jurisdictions around the country to see how they handle the motorcycles. He says Maryland needs to investigate whether higher penalties would reduce problems associated with the motorcycles and/or whether laws need to be changed.

"It is definitely worth looking into whether or not we should totally ban these from our public roads or not," Bronrott says.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the seven-car, chain-reaction crash that closed the Beltway Wednesday night.

It started at about 7 p.m. when a Prince George's County police officer spotted a speeding motorcycle and positioned himself to stop it on the inner loop, police said. The motorcycle rider swerved in front of a civilian car and sped away, causing the officer's car to hit the civilian's.

That car rolled down an embankment onto the outer loop, where five other cars crashed into each other.

Two people in the car that went over the embankment died. Prince George's County Police have identified them as Kevin McCarter, 40, of Ft. Washington, Md. and Sidney Clanton Jr., age unknown, of Buffalo, N.Y.

Two of the injured were police officers. One was flown to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other was also hospitalized, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Law enforcement sources tell WTOP the officers involved in the accident had been alerted to a felony in progress, and were given a lookout for the cycle.

Officers are looking for the motorcycle and rider believed to be responsible.

Police say they were chasing a black, high-speed, nimble racing motorcycle.

A video camera in the police cruiser did capture the chase, but police have not provided a more detailed description of the bike, or any license plate information.

The accident and rescue effort caused the highway to be closed in both directions, backing up traffic for miles.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 301-772-4710 or 301-731-4422."

I understand your point, however there is no need for you to come on here and decide to belittle someone for a post that they are fully entitled to put up.

This is a risk with bikes, dog breeds and any other thing that people decide to generalize. You cannot live your life letting other people create your're reputation. I am not saying that he is right for what he did, but I am saying it is not yours, mine or anybody elses place to tear him down about it. This isn't the first time I have seen this on here or debated it on here. My argument has nothing to do with what he posted it, is everybodys judgemental comments they have to add.

So now I shouldnt even be on a bike because I am a 26 year old that would rather be a homeowner that pays a mortgage and taxes than have full leathers to ride around town in? This is the exact type of comment I am talking about. Nice logic my friend.

That was the smart arse in me coming out. But how are you going to pay this house off from a hopital bed? Especially if your stay is twice as long because of a lack of gear
