East coast roads from GA to CT

So, I have 6 months to debate riding for a wedding in CT. Ride would be from Atl to Ct (near Boston).

It is about 1000 miles. Doable, but would definitely be a hike. I am going to start looking at maps shortly, but would rather avoid interstates. Anyone know of fun yet direct roads to ride north to south up the east coast?

If you want to make decent time you got either U.S. RT1 or I95. Unfortunately, both get bogged down as you get to the Washington D.C. area right on up through N.J. and N.Y.. Try to avoid those areas during rush hour.

...in college I traveled from RI to MD back to RI all the time for parties, etc... its a long haul on I95 in a car but on the bike you "don't" get stuck in traffic jams...

That's the thing, if ya got a week to spare you can ride the secondary routes. Probably more fun but it's gonna take twice as long.

You really need to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. A really great ride and you can camp along the route if you are so inclined. You should miss tourist season at that time of the year and one of the rangers told me they go a bit easier on the speed limit enforcement then.

stay off of the interstates and rt1 if ya wanna have fun and good scenery, if in a major hurry hit I-95, its the quickest route, esp if you time it so your not going though DC during rush hours.

1k miles of secondary roads in a day would be tough but doable, I'd recommend planning for ~600 if you want to have time to enjoy the sites, take pictures etc. Would be a great 2-day trip and there are lots of TLZers in the NoVA area that could likely put you up for a night (myself included).

There are lots of great roads, you can pretty much follow the blue ridge moutian range most of the way. I'd just poke around on a few maps and pick a general route that looks fun, then ride it, but don't worry too much about staying exactly on route, if a road goes generally where you need to go and looks fun, take it! That was my approach when I rode my DR250 home from NY to VA and I had an absolute blast. I've done 1k mile days of slab before and that's fun in its own way, but 400 miles of 35mph roads on the little 250 was much more fun imho

Yeah, the blue ridge does run almost the whole way doesn't it?

I don't really have a limit. I am going no matter what, and depending on what project I am on at the time, I might take 2 weeks. I figure if pressed, 3 days north, 2 days for the wedding, and another 3 days back.
