Castle socket for swingarm removal
Hi guys,
I am looking at removing my swingarm to check and replace/re-grease the bearings as it squeaks now after constant riding in the rain. 1st question is can this be removed easily using the backyard method of screwdriver and mallet or will it be lock tite/torqued in place and require the castle socket. If I require the castle socket, is there anywhere in Oz that sells them cheaply? I have seen a seller on Ebay in the UK that can do it for about $60-$70 |

I got mine for 5,000 yen from the shop
seems to be about the price. Or 3,000 yen for a socket that you have to grind down. Someone said they had success with a mountain bike socket or something ... there's a thread round here somewhere ...

An angle grinder, 27mm socket, a vivid and alcohol was all I used.
You might the US is slightly cheaper.

If you factor up the cost of the socket and time involved in making it - surely it's cheaper just to buy one

I could buy a cheap socket and modify it but by the time I factor in the cost of the socket and my attempt to modify it I would rather pay for one made.
I have looked at the thread Loki_TLR but it seems I may have trouble finding the bicycle BB tool. Anyone bought something similar in OZ recently? |

I've made similar stuff out of a piece of scrap metal pipe. Pipe wrench to turn it. Total cost $0, but I do have lots of old scrap metal pipe lying around....

So which one is the better out of the 2? One is updated and "The outside diameter of the tool has been changed so it provides a universal fit on all Shimano and ISIS Drive eight-notch cups" But is that relevant to the TLR?
Also how do you turn it as the other side there is just a hollow circle? ![]() Shimano has one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...px?ModelID=995 or http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...?ModelID=17702[/quote] |

Actually, in the pic:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...?ModelID=17702 It looks like on the other side you could use a socket or spanner to turn it. Is this right? Does anyone know what size socket/spanner you would need? |

BUY THE OE ONE jeez it's only like $50 and if you'd just bought it would have saved all the time you spent in this thread
![]() You remind me of the people who'd drive 30km out of their way and wait 2 hours for a tank of gas at 2 cents a liter cheaper than their closest servo ![]()

Well.. for me $50 is way too much for a tool that will hardly be used! Then I'd rather get it off the ugly way and buy something hex for replacement.

It was a false economy for me ... maybe you have cheaper sockets over there or your time is worth less

Just go to Supercheap and buy a 30mm or 1-3/16" half inch socket.
Mark out the four slots and grind away excess making sure you leave a bit of meat on the pegs for fine tuning. Make sure pegs are long enough and use file to trim off excess for snug fit. Try and get the cut away area level all way around. Took me about an hour and it works and I'm no tradesman. I knew the cheap superworks sockets would be good for something. |

Taking an hour (not including going to the shop) it's already cheaper for me to order the OE socket
see what I mean?
