I changed the chain and sprockets (DID 530ZVM & decent steel 17/42 sprockets) on my bike at a friends yesterday (he has a proper workshop). Before we started everything was fine and all working OK (to the best of my knowledge .... ) Once all was done and the bike back together it made a slight occasional "graunch" sound as the wheel rotated.
As I had an appointment, I rode the bike home about 6 or 7 miles with no problems.
this evening I have been trying to locate the sound, and it appears to be coming from the wheel hub rather than the chain and sprockets, and it gets worse the tighter you do up the wheel nut (hence asking the correct torque earlier)
I have taken the wheel out and checked all the bearings and they feel fine to the finger, rotating smoothly and no feel of sloppiness or tightnes - they've only done about 5k miles since replacement. I've cleaned and re-greased the spacers and spindle, double checked the wheel/chain alignment, and all is OK thee, but as I rotate the rear wheel gently with the nut done up tight I can still just hear a noise and it always seems to be when the wheel is at a certain point in it's rotation ... though if I slacken the nut so it's just too loose to feel comfortable riding with it (6-7Kg/M ish) it go's away
Now, under normal circumstances I'd probably just live with it and see what happens, but I am supposed to be on the ferry to France after work tomorrow for a 5-600 mile round trip to Le Mans for the MotoGP
I am tempted to call in to work tomorrow and go get a new set of wheel bearings just for peace of mind, but it's such a ball-ache to do .... decisions, decisions ......
has anyone else ever had this "noise" issue
