» Welcome to TLZone |
In 1997 Suzuki released the TL1000S motorcycle (often referred to as the TLS), since then the japanese twin has developed an almost cult like movement amongst riders. A year later, Suzuki added another horse to the stable, this time the race oriented TL1000R (TLR). Originally designed to be the "duc killer" the bike boasted more horsepower than its italian rival, and a price tag that made it affordable to the daily rider. Since their inception the TL series has been turning heads on the pavement, so it just seemed logical to have a place to talk about them when summer days have gone, and the next trackday is still a few days away. Thus, TLZone was created, and is now the largest and most popular online bulletin board to discuss all things TL related. Not only is TLZone the place to come to talk about bikes, but has also become a strong community of bikers who share interests outside of riding. Whether you're new to riding, or a seasoned racer, there is something for everyone in the Zone. Come on in and scrub the tires.

Long story short, old server house cancelled my account 10 days early. Unable to reach them on the telephone (an answering machine, really!!?!), I grabbed the servers and moved them all to the new location. We had planned on doing this over the weekend...you know with preparation and everything. Instead it was a shit show amateur fuck fest. Luckily we have dlloyd managing the 1's and 0's and we were able to get back up pretty quickly.
We should be go to from now on, but might have some downtime (couple minutes tops) here and there as we optimize all the severs being in one place.
In other news, here's a picture of gorgeous Streetfighter.

It may have felt like the Earth moving...but in reality it was just TLZ. New server, new colocation facility, same site. Things should be A LOT FASTER now, and they'll only get faster over the coming weeks.
For the geeky, we're on a Quadcore 2.3ghz Xeon, 4GB Ram, RAID 5 with LOM. Sometime in the coming weeks, we'll actually split the DB off from the site, and run that on a separate server for even more geeky awesomeness.
Let us know if there's any part of the site that isn't quite working right. We tested the move earlier this week, but god knows what's going to happen once Steve shows up again.

» What the Frak Happened this Weekend? AKA Why is everything wonky on the Zone? |

For starters Happy New Year everyone, and welcome back to your 9-5 work grind. For me, today was especially hard not only because San Francisco is swapped with fog and chilly weather, but because of the events of this weekend.
So I'm sitting in Santa Barbara this weekend, celebrating the new year. It's 70F and sunny...basically paradise. I'm about to go get dinner, and hit the town when I get a txt from our server guy (dlloyd).
"The Zones are down" my cell phone says. The bandwidth charts have plummeted, and the power reader went from it's usual 2 amp reading to basically nothing.
Fuck, the server bit it. What could it be...a power supply maybe? I hope so, those are easy to get and cheap, but it could be a mother board...much harder to find, let alone get quickly. That'd be a few hundred for sure.
The Zone's server shares space with a couple other projects of mine, a long with the servers of a couple friends. I knew one of my buddies was moving his sever into his house, and would likely be doing that during the holidays. Maybe he nicked a cable or something on the way out?
It's easy enough to do, since the space is so crowded. He's server was showing down as well, so this seemed like the likely possibility.
So I give him a call, "Hey...random question...were you in the server house tonight?"
He replies, "Yeah how did you know?" I'm pumped, because this means its not the server dying, and probably just a loose wire that finally got banged out of place.
"My alarms show both our servers down, what did you do"
He replies, "I grabbed my server, and I'm driving home....which server of yours is down" I rattle off some specs and model numbers....and there's just silence.
"Uhh...yeah...that's the server I have right here in my car"
Great...he took my server and not his. Fair enough they all look pretty similar, but seriously!??! Fuck. Easy fix though, he's 10 minutes away, and can pop it back in no problem. Total down time an hour, and on Saturday night at 9pm that's not a big deal.
I get a call an hour later. "Dude, my key isn't working on the doors, can you call someone to let us in."
The short version of this part of the story is no I can't. Without telling me, the company that hosts the servers closed its VIP calling number. The regular office is 9am-5pm, so everything goes to voicemail. They have a 24/7 trouble ticket system, so I fill it out and tag it as "Emergency". That was Saturday night, I have yet to receive a call back nearly 36 hours later.
So we try another key that another server guy has...no luck. None of these keys are letting us in (RFID keys). So he drops the server off at a friend's house, and I drive up from Santa Barbara late last night.
Grabbed the server, went to the server house...my ket still works for some reason. And 30 minutes later, the Zones are up again.
Apparently the hard-pull closed the clock to lose it's time, and some other wonkines...but by the time you read this, the site should be functioning normally.
Hopefully this is the last of our outages for the year, but I already had plans to move out of that server house and into a new one (likely to cause some slowiness or TLZ down time).
So that's the crazy story of why the Zone was down for 2 days, and then acting weird. The big take away from this is...IT'S ALL STEVE'S FAULT!
